I think “art” is appropriate, at least in the case of what Spielmann calls “real sacrifices”, because it is a matter of judgment and imagination rather than something our finite intellects can deduce or calculate to a conclusion. I know of books where that has been done, and I share your extreme distaste for that practice. It’s probably best to look upon this as a games collection rather than a textbook. I think the book is worthwhile in both its parts, and could be appreciated and well-used by players rated from, say, one should have basic tactical proficiency to get the most out of the book all the way up to and through the master level. Changing the notation to algebraic and adding diagrams is reasonable,since it does not change the work of the author. On principle we incline to rate a sacrificial game more highly than a positional game.
