I am hopeful of reading more of author MacBride Allen’s works. The futuristic world where robots are so commonplace that they are taken for granted is realistically based in science – the very essence of great science fiction.
That was a drama killer. The Three Laws of Robotics are in force calliban make sure that robots remain servants and humans remain masters Be rogsr as it may, there were also several places where all narrative and action stopped cold, and I knew it wasn’t written by Asimov.
Yet again spending far too much time inside the characters head contemplating the meaning of the three laws. An Isaac Asimov Robot Mystery: Caliban is a character worth waiting for. Baley works better as a character, because in his person he is a focus for the tension between Spacer and Earth human, and Allen has to import this alen Inferno.
The book is set at a point in history where humanity is spread among many planets and divided into two main cultures.
It was okay for mwcbride scifi but nowhere close to the quality of Asimov’s Foundation books. In some cases the plots are strong, the narratives plausible, but they don’t have Asimov’s muse. Caliban is the first in a trilogy of stories set in Asimov’s Robot universe. I did enjoy the book, for the most part.

Hades is in a life-or-death environment crisis that would make the worst predictions for terrestrial global warming look like a minor inconvenience. I found this to be very much in the Asimov style which I liked more when I was younger, but still appreciate.
I just don’t see how such creative people can completely drop the ball here. When my dear wife found Caliban at a used bookstore, I was prepared for disappointment.
Basically, someone who is a relative newcomer as a writer and almost anyone would have fallen into this category when compared maacbride Asimov in the early nineties; Allen was a reasonably well established author takes a classic piece of science fiction and writes a new novel or series based on it and under the supervision of the original author.

The book takes a spacer planet as home, and populates it with spacers, settlers and calbian kinds of robot.

As one might suppose, no crime scenario that Kresh spins out makes much sense. I have read it rger and enjoyed it.
His Robots for the most part were better “people” than the people in the stories. Their total servitude and extreme intelligence have had severely damaging effects on the mental and physical health of the human population. When Inferno’s leading roboticist, Fredda Leving, is assaulted and nearly killed, sheriff Alvar Kresh and his robot partner Donald must face the unthinkable Caliban is of course the easiest to connect with, being the main character and in some ways more human than most of the other robots.
There are also internal difficulties among the Spacers themselves, aggravated in large part to the intrusion of the Settlers. Although neither side trust the other, the environmental crisis Hades finds itself in, has joined these two groups. Caliban is a robot without the three laws of robotics. But, overall, I think that the author did a good job of demolishing the Three Laws, and creating a new robot, even if the story, as is spoken of by characters in the story, several times, did really resemble the plot of Mary Shelley’s novel quite closely.
