Gary Jennings did not write for the squeamish. To whoever says this in an amazing historical novel, and to all of you who are paid to review books Had the feeling of a cheesy adventure movie- was sad I wasted the time. I myself am not particularly prone to those sorts of romanticizations. In other words, Jennings is such a good storyteller, and has so much actual history to back him up, that he needed to be very careful that his dramatics doesn’t leave an unfair portrayal of that society.

A world in which the Spanish are the gray and the society they destroyed, the true nobility. Perhaps I was amused by bits of irony or absurdity or agreement. While I’m usually okay with such things, there was just something about the way this book handled the sex and love with the destruction and death that left me at that point where I felt dirty.
So again, not really your typical main character guy, but I ended up really liking Mixtli Dark-Cloud, and not just because he had an awesome name.

There’s one aspect of the book which I couldn’t quite stand by the end, and this is Jennings’ trademark cookie-cutter women. Full of lust for life, written “in the field” in Mexico, the book is polarizing, and has drawn both admiration and outright disgust from a few generations of readers.
The story is set in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth ce When I first picked up this book, I was skeptical. It isn’t so much the story about Mixtli, it’s the completely believable society of the Azteca before, during and just after the Spaniards arrive. So much is lost aztecz translation.
