This is a very good book by the first great church historian. At the time The Church History was written, AD, the canon of Sacred Scripture, was still not fully formed, that is, no one in the East or the West or anywhere in all of Christendom had a Bible as we know it today! The true faith was not centered on Rome and there was no pope. Although he shows more skepticism than some might expect, he ultimately spends a lot of time giving extensive accounts of the deaths of various individual martyrs when accounts of theology or even politics would probably be more highly valued by the modern day scholar.
A great book for anyone wanting to learn more about the early Church. A really insightful and inspiring look into the life of the church – its teachings, practices, leadership, struggles, sufferings, and triumphs – during its first three centuries. Sometimes the commentary provides some evaluation of Eusebius’s history and the state of scholarly discussion.
cfsareia The line is often blurred between the two and I suppose maybe that’s kind of the point. At the end of each book within the Church History Maier has added his own commentary, which may provide more background information about the era of Eusebius’s discussion.
Eusebius is a scholar, I learnt a lot of new things from this book. And then of course there are all sorts of random details to puzzle and delight, such as the statue of Jesus Eu The author of the introduction seems to fault Eusebius for not writing a different book, but I find a lot to like in what he did write. This is not meant to be a critique of the Roman church today, merely an observation.
Preview — The History of the Church by Eusebius. My edition is a Eusebius is the first Christian to write a church history. Christian authors in the first three centuries. This particular edition is chock-full of supplementary photos, maps, tables e commentary. The Romans were hideously cruel.
Much of the text is given over to accounts of the suffering of the early Christians who were martyred at the hands of the Romans. It finishes with quotations from various edicts eussebio to Christianity issued by Constantine. When things go poorly for the enemies of Christianity, Eusubius attributes this to God’s wrath.
However, Eusebius’s History is supposedly the best record of the period immediately following the time of the Gospels and even describes how the Gospels were assembled, or so Pitre claims–I haven’t read it yet. These seemingly foundational questions were anything but simple and led to dealing with endless heresies; sorting cesareiia numerous writings of varying quality; conducting repeated councils; developing and refining creeds, and yes, even to specifying re concerned Mary, but only because it was her humanity and relationship to Jesus which in the end settled so many questions about Him.
Who made the barbarous, uncivilized customs of uncivilized races give place to his own civilized eueebio most humane laws? We must, of course, put first the holy quartet of the gospels, followed by the Acts of the Apostles.
